Set on 8½ Acres of land that used to be a coconut plantation, Cocoon Resort & Villas is a serene property located in the coastal town of Induruwa. However, this is not a beach resort!
Positioned on the land side, amidst a rather dense jungle, Cocoon has numerous species of birds and a few larger animals including monkeys and deer roaming its grounds, giving you the feel of being in Dambulla or Habarana.
Cocoon commenced operations in January 2012 and makes up for its lack a beach by arranging a 3 ½ Km shuttle service to Warahena Beach Hotel, a typically lazy beach shack complete with hammocks and posters of Bob Marley. The fully stocked bar and rather large speakers, however hint at a more lively nightlife.
The resort also has its own Ayurvedic Spa, ‘The Bath and The Stage’, offering facilities such as a sauna, steam room and hot tub along with head and body massages. At night the space is transformed into an entertainment area, where Sri Lankan cultural shows are a stand out feature.
The fishing village of Induruwa is located just south of the famous resort town of Bentota, a mere 70kms from . The travel time is less than an hour thanks to the southern expressway. When travelling from Colombo along the expressway, take the 5th Exit (Welipanna). The turn off to the hotel itself is just past the famous Induruwa Beach Hotel.
The 26 luxurious rooms are spread across three categories – 16 Silk Rooms, 7 Extravagant Villas and 3 Grand Villas. The rooms themselves are spacious, comfortable and luxurious, with a king sized bed, cable television, internet access and a fully stocked mini-bar that all complement a sprawling bathroom space that includes a hot-tub in each room (the Extravagant Villa has two hot-tubs, one indoor and one outdoor). We stayed in a Silk Room, which has a spacious outdoor sitting area complete with easy chairs as well as a small sofa.
Food and Drink
While the main restaurant offers both buffet and a-la-carte, it is the ‘Garden Wadiya’, an outdoor sit out area that offers the best ambience. Additionally, a private barbeque could be organized in the privacy of your own room’s terrace.
Things To Do
The resort offers many in-house activities such as table tennis, badminton, darts, bird watching, jogging and cycling trails, a gym and a great play area for kids. The highlight however has to be the 14Kms cycling trail that takes you through a typical rural Sri Lankan village, with stops at the local Blacksmith (where you could assist him in his work), a cinnamon planters house and the Rajamahavihara Temple, located on top of a steep cliff, offering spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.
Additional activities that can be arranged, include sea turtle watching, a boat ride down the Madu Ganga (a river in nearby Balapitiya), toddy tapping and mask carving, a catamaran ride down the Bentota River and city tours to both Hikkaduwa and Galle.
What LT Loves
In addition to being an experience I found both relaxing and rejuvenating, it was pleasantly surprising to note that Cocoon is an environmentally conscientious resort, with solar panels that not only power the resort but also contribute 50KVA to the national grid complementing their own water processing plant installed at considerable expense, providing all rooms with water pure enough to drink straight off the tap.
The abundant tropical flora and fauna add to what is a rather unique experience for a resort on the southern coast.
